FROM ISTANBUL TO SAO PAULO

THESE ARE POTENTIAL EUROPEAN CHANGE AGENTS ASSEMBLED IN ISTANBUL:

VI HAD A GREAT TIME IN SUNNY ISTANBUL!

THIS IS HALUK, “OUR” MAN IN ISTANBUL, HOST FOR THE YMCA EUROPE WORKSHOP “CATCH THE VISION” OCTOBER 15-21

Gerard Tosseram and I presented the Change Agents and Waking the Giant Campaign for 45 potential Change Agents from all over Europe. It was an enthusiastic group of strong, experienced and well informed young people. Haluk was our host in the Y- building of Istanbul, a fantastic building from 1880, a few feet from Hagia Sofia and the Blue Mosque, really downtown Istanbul, in  the middle of the historic places. The location could not be better. See below Hagia Sofia and then the Y-building a few feet away!

There were of course excursions and visits to interesting places, and the whole group went from Europe to Asia to illustrate that Istanbul is the city where East meets west. Personally I was in Istanbul a week a few years ago, when I was European Secretary, and welcomed Turkey as associate members of YMCA Europe then.

I had good conversations with my old friends and colleagues from YMCA Europe, See below Vardan, Juan, Adam, Gerard and Michal. We discussed the further development of Change Agents in Europe as well as the big YMCA Europe Festival in Prague in August 2013. All the 200 Change Agents from all around the world will come to Prague to experience a week of great youth exposure, youth programmes, youth empowerment in action and be trained for their future tasks and challenges. The whole thing is a very successful cooperation with YMCA Europe and we are all looking forward to the Festival next summer. Join now and make sure that your young people will not miss out on this great experience in Prague, one of the beautiful cities in Europe!

We had also good participation from Canada and South Africa, see below!

Then it was time to travel on, as always. I was on my way to China, both Shanghai and Nanjing were on my travel itinerary, the ticket was bought and people were waiting to pick me up at Shanghai Airport. But visa for China was not possible this time. (I just deleted any further reference to this.) So new plans had to be improvised. I went to Oslo and had interesting meetings with the Norwegian authorities together with my good friend Fredrik from the Norwegian movement. We discussed funding of Change Agents in Europe and looked for funding for the 1 Million Voices – the big youth research we are planning for. We made progress with different offices and plan for further follow up with governmental and other agencies. Then Ingunn had translated a book about Alina Margolis Edelman, a famous survivor from the Warsaw ghetto and a personal friend of Ingunn and me. Ingunn has spent a year translating the book from German to Norwegian. Now there was a public launch of the book at the House of Literature in Oslo with presence among others from the Polish Embassy in Oslo. This was a great event to take part in!

Official meetings with the Norwegian YWCA-YMCA was combined with meetings with the Secretary General of the World YWCA, visiting Oslo at the same time. and I enjoyed visits to my two daughters and their families. Family life is sometimes needed!

But the travel schedule catches up with me again and now I pack my suitcase for Latin America and Sao Paulo.

Below you see us dressed up for the 110th anniversary of Sao Paulo YMCA. It was a grand celebration with 700 guests and music and fun.

The young people from Sao Paulo YMCA presenting music and song and all the great programmes of Sao Paulo YMCA. It was a very enjoyable evening and it continued over the weekend.

Responses

  1. God kveld, Johan Wilhelm.

Hilsen Johan Vilhelm i Brasil

  2. Another wonderful travelogue… I see our friend Juan Simoes Iglesias in one of the photos, perhaps the 2nd most well traveled man in the Y, after yourself!
